The operator’s mounting plate, the hinge posts, the gate frame itself: that’s where fabrication comes in.
LiftMaster operators expect a gate that moves with minimal resistance. The moment a hinge sags or a frame twist throws the leaf out of square, the motor draws more amps and burns through its capacitor faster. That’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: LiftMaster’s force-sensing logic is sensitive enough that a 3/8-inch sag in a 14-foot gate will read as an obstruction. If you’re seeing error codes and the gate isn’t obviously bound, check the welds before you condemn the operator.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for structural steel, we fabricate to the gate’s actual measurements rather than ordering a LiftMaster-branded part that was never designed to fit a custom ornamental gate. For hinge components that mount directly to the operator arm, we match the bolt pattern and the pivot geometry to the original LiftMaster drawing. If a factory bracket is available and undamaged, we use it. If we’re fabricating one, you’ll see the measurement sheet before we cut steel.
Signs Your LiftMaster Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate drags on one side and leaves a scrape mark in the concrete. The hinge post has usually shifted, or the lower hinge weld has cracked and dropped the leaf by a half-inch or more. - You can see daylight through a joint that used to be tight. A cracked weld at the hinge flange or the post base plate. - The operator arm is tearing through its mounting bracket. LiftMaster arms bolt to the gate through a small steel plate. If that plate was never reinforced for a heavy ornamental leaf, the bolts eventually wallow out their holes and tear through. We fabricate a thicker plate and weld it in place of the original.

DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things safely. With the operator unplugged and the gate in manual release, push the gate through its full travel by hand. If it binds anywhere, note where. Take photos of the hinges, the post bases, and any cracks you find. Those photos help us price the job before we arrive.
What you shouldn’t do is weld on the gate yourself unless you’re a certified welder working on structural steel. A bad weld on a hinge post turns a 600-pound gate into a falling hazard, and LiftMaster operators won’t compensate for a poorly aligned leaf; they’ll just chew through capacitors until the board fails. MIG welding on galvanized or painted ornamental steel also produces fumes that can make you seriously ill without proper ventilation and respirator gear.

The wild card is coastal proximity: gates within a mile of the Intracoastal or the ocean lose two to three years on average unless the steel is sealed and repainted every four or five years.
